Radiotherapy in Uveal Melanoma: A Review of Ocular Complications

نویسندگان

چکیده

Uveal melanoma represents the most prevalent form of primary malignant intraocular tumor in adults. Historically, enucleation was considered gold-standard approach treatment uveal melanoma. Currently, radiotherapy is commonly used therapy, aiming at a better quality life. However, can result several ocular complications, some which may be vision-threatening. Radiation-induced dry eye, scleral necrosis, cataract, rubeosis iridis, neovascular glaucoma, radiation retinopathy, maculopathy, and optic neuropathy are common complications. This article aims to summarize current literature regarding complications after radiotherapy, as well their clinical features, risk factors, management strategies. A thorough understanding these issues crucial for ophthalmologists oncologists provide optimal patient care, improve visual outcomes, minimize long-term

Radiation related complications after ruthenium plaque radiotherapy of uveal melanoma.

AIMS/BACKGROUND To analyse radiation related complications and secondary enucleation after irradiation of malignant uveal melanoma with ruthenium-106 plaques. METHODS A series of 100 consecutive eyes irradiated in 1981-91 was analysed using the life table method and the Cox proportional hazards model. The median apical and scleral tumour dose was 100 Gy (range 15-200 Gy) and 1000 Gy (range 20...

Plaque radiotherapy of uveal melanoma with predominant ciliary body involvement.

BACKGROUND There are several options for management of ciliary body melanoma, including plaque radiotherapy, charged particle irradiation, local resection, and enucleation. The choice of therapy depends on many factors, and plaque radiotherapy is often used. OBJECTIVES To determine the outcome of plaque radiotherapy in the management of ciliary body melanoma and to identify the risk factors a...

performed. Previous cases of vitelliform retinopathy have had some clinical findings consistent with MAR, while others have not. None of these reports had clinical evidence of choroidal involvement. The vitelliform lesions have been postulated to represent a new paraneoplastic clinical manifestation. The pathologic results in this case argue against a paraneoplastic entity but may suggest a loc...

A new model for Spread Out Bragg Peak in proton therapy of uveal melanoma

In this research, in order to improve our calculations in treatment planning for proton radiotherapy of ocular melanoma, we improved our human eye phantom planning system in GEANT4 toolkit. Different analytical models have investigated the creating of Spread Out Bragg Peak (SOBP) in the tumor area. Bortfeld’s model is one of the most important analytical methods. Using convolution method, a new...

Radiation retinopathy following plaque radiotherapy for posterior uveal melanoma.

OBJECTIVE To identify the risk factors that lead to the development of radiation retinopathy following plaque radiotherapy for posterior uveal melanoma. Radiation retinopathy is a slowly progressive, occlusive vasculopathy characterized by radiation-induced endothelial damage. METHODS Review of the medical records of patients with posterior uveal melanoma treated with plaque radiotherapy. R...
